The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) report attributed the accident to faulty signalling caused by botched repair works, highlighting potential for prevention had repeated glitches been addressed. The case was handed over to the CBI, who arrested three railway officials. While the CBI has filed a chargesheet, there has been no further progress. Indian Railways has undertaken safety initiatives, including safety drives, inspections, seminars, circulars, audits and mock exercises with the NDRF. An independent safety audit of stations was also conducted, with 40 stations inspected so far.

Dono pilots ab work pe jaa sakte hain, lekin abhi tak recovery kar rahe hain. दुखी हैं। इस घटना ने बिहार की संजू देवी को भी बहुत दुख पहुंचाया क्योंकि वह DNA मिलान न होने के कारण अपने बेटे का शरीर दावा नहीं कर पाईं। ओडिशा सरकार को 28 अज्ञात शवों का अंतिम संस्कार करना पड़ा, क्योंकि शरीर के विघटन की उन्नत अवस्था और शवों को संरक्षित करने में देरी के कारण DNA परीक्षण में समस्या आई। रेलवे और ओडिशा सरकार को हताहतों की संख्या में विसंगतियों के लिए आलोचना का सामना करना पड़ा है। कई परिवारों को क्षतिपूर्ति का भुगतान करने के बावजूद, अधिकारी अभी भी लापता दस्तावेजों के कारण कुछ मौत के मामलों को हल नहीं कर पाए हैं। दुर्घटना के पीड़ितों के परिवार अभी भी इस त्रासदी के भावनात्मक आघात से जूझ रहे हैं।
