"The intended trip that took an unexpected turn"
Although some of you may find the title strange, it is true. We planned a vacation, but an unexpected series of events took place and it turned out to be a total mess. We ended up landing at those places which we were not intended to.
Look...
more... back into time, circa August 2011. My birthday had just passed on 7th August, and we were ready to head onto a vacation to Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. Our plan was to visit Nainital and other adjoining places. At that time, I was residing in Kolkata. So my father booked tickets for 3 of us, myself and my parents. Our tickets were in 13019 Howrah Kathgodam Bagh Express in sleeper class, end to end on 13th August 2011, the day of Raksha Bandhan. (Kathgodam is the nearest railhead for Nainital.)
It is obvious that my brain cannot recall every detail (I was merely a kid aged 6 by that time), but I have summarized what I have in mind below. My mother assisted me in gathering the trip's specifics as well. We arrived at the Howrah station ahead of schedule and boarded┬аthe train. The train left at approximately 9:45 p.m. according to schedule. The locomotive was most likely a WAP4 or WAM4 for the Howrah or Asansol shed, which would take us to Barauni Junction, from where we were led to our destination by an EMD or ALCo.
We had prepared enough food from home to sustain us till the following afternoon. However, the trip would be finished on the third day of boarding so we would have been out of stock of food till we reached Kathgodam. We obtained the remainder of our food┬аfrom my┬аmaternal grandmother's (Nani) home, who lived in Siwan, which was in between the route. I recall that my uncle (Mama) gave us a camera he had borrowed from us. However, my mother validated that the camera was already with us and he did not hand it over to us.
When I was a little child,┬аI had┬аa habit of making friends with a lot of other passengers. I did the same on┬аthis trip as well, and now it was time to disembark. On August 15, when we disembarked at┬аKathgodam, the area was shrouded in a dense fog. After arriving at the hotel, we took a day to relax.
We reserved a car for the following day so we could see tourist attractions like Suicide Point and the Nainital Zoo, among others. It was not going to be a good day; it began to rain heavily. Because of the incessant┬аrain, we had to purchase umbrellas there. We made our way back to the lodging after the day's sightseeing.
The night took a bad turn for us. All around, there were landslides. On August 17, the following morning, my father alerted┬аthat we would need to leave the city anyhow. The driver agreed to drop us off at Kathgodam station when we contacted him. Despite how unbelievable this may sound, I have witnessed a landslide occur in front of me. We had a narrow escape┬аand were caught in the landslide-related traffic. We were able to move after almost two hours, and we arrived at Kathgodam station. I cannot describe how worse the situation was;┬аall I can recall is my father saying, "Jidhar ki bhi train mile bas baith jana hai," which translates to, "We will board any train that is available."
In the evening of 17th, we got a train upto Amritsar. I think it was some special train because I could not find any hints of any regular train running between Kathgodam and Amritsar. We managed two general tickets and boarded the general compartments. When I woke up the next morning, we were already in Amritsar.
We didn't remain in Amritsar for very long. We just got off the train, got fresh┬аat the station, and left our stuff at┬аAmritsar Junction's┬аcloakroom. At Amritsar,┬аwe saw the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, and the Attari-Wagah Border. The same evening, we returned to┬аAmritsar station. We left for Haridwar, most likely taking the 14632 Amritsar Dehradun Express, and reached the following morning.
We reserved a hotel here. I saw an electricity system and card-based gate lock for the first time at Hotel Ginger, where we were staying. The following day, we traveled to Rishikesh after visiting the temples of Har Ki Paudi, Chandi Devi, and Mansa Devi at Haridwar, the previous day. We made it because these two locations are only a few kilometers apart. We visited the Terah Manzila Mandir, Ram Jhula, and Laxman Jhula in Rishikesh. The same day, we left for our hotel in Haridwar, where we┬аpicked up our bags, and headed to the Haridwar railway station. On August 20, 2011, late at night, we boarded the Upasana Express to return to Howrah, arriving on August 22, 2011.
Thus, a week full of "hoch-poch" came to an end in this way, leaving us with a suitcase full of unexpected memories.
The recent blogs that Mr. Arnab and Mr. Kumud posted on the forum served as my inspiration for this travelogue. If we all post our travelogues here, I believe there will be more fascinating ones added to the forum, which would be fun to read.
I hope you all like it. Signing off...

Yo, this trip was supposed to be lit but it turned into a hot mess real quick. The plan was to hit up Nainital but we ended up at all the wrong places.
Back in August 2011, right after my b-day on the 7th, we were hyped for a vacay to Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. We wanted to check out Nainital and other cool spots. I was living in Kolkata back then. My pops scored tickets for us on the 13019 Howrah Kathgodam Bagh Express in sleeper class for August 13, 2011, the day of Raksha Bandhan. We were all set to go!
We showed up early at Howrah station, hopped on the train, and off we went around 9:45 p.m. We had our grub sorted for the trip, but it was gonna run out before we hit Kathgodam. Luckily, we snagged some more eats from my grandma's crib in Siwan along the way. My uncle was supposed to pass us a camera but turns out moms already had it.
As a lil' kid, I was all about making pals with other peeps on the train. Fast forward to our stop on August 15 in Kathgodam, it was foggy AF. We chilled at the hotel for a day before taking a ride to check out Suicide Point and the Nainital Zoo. But the rain messed up our plans and we had to buy umbrellas on the fly.
That night things got real sketchy with landslides everywhere. The next day, we had to bounce from the city ASAP. After some close calls, we finally made it to Kathgodam station. We hopped on a train to Amritsar and crashed there for a bit before hitting up the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, and the Attari-Wagah Border.
After a quick stop in Haridwar, we bounced to Rishikesh and hit up a few spots before heading back to Kolkata on the Upasana Express. The week was a total rollercoaster but it ended with some dope memories.
Shoutout to Mr. Arnab and Mr. Kumud for the inspo! If everyone shares their travel stories, this forum would be fire.
Hope y'all vibed with the tale. Peace out!

Toh kuch tum logo ko title ajeeb lagega, par sacchai hai. Humne ek chutti ka plan banaya, par kuch achanak ghatnayein aane se sab ghoom gaya. Hum wahan pahuche jahan hum jaana nahi chahte the.
Wapas jaate hain time mein, lagbhag August 2011. Mera janamdin bus 7th August ko hua tha, aur hum Devbhoomi Uttarakhand ke liye taiyaar the. Hamara plan tha Nainital aur dusre saath hi jagahon ko ghoorna. Tab main Kolkata mein tha. Toh mere papa ne teen ticket book kiya, main aur mere parents ke liye. Humare tickets the 13019 Howrah Kathgodam Bagh Express mein sleeper class mein, end to end on 13th August 2011, Raksha Bandhan ke din. (Kathgodam Nainital ke liye sabse nazdeek railhead hai.)
Kuch yaad nahi reh sakta meri dimaag mein (main sirf 6 saal ka bachcha tha tab), par maine jo yaad rakha hai, woh yaha summary kiya hai.
Par safar teesre din khatam hoga, toh ammu lagbhag khana khatam ho jata agar hum Kathgodam pahuchte. Humne baki khana maa ke maa ke (Nani) ghar se liya, jo Siwan mei rehti thi, jo route ke beech mein tha.
Aur same yaha bhi trip pe kiya, aur ab humein utarna tha. 15 August ko hum utre Kathgodam mein, wahan thick fog tha. Hotel pahuchne ke baad, humne ek din aram kiya.
Humne agle din ke liye ek car book kiya tha jisse hum apne jaise tourist spots dekh sake jaise Suicide Point aur Nainital Zoo, aur aur bhi. Par mazaa nahi aayga; baarish shuru ho gayi thi. Barish ki wajah se wahan se umbrella khareedne pad gaye. Humne sightseeing karke waapas aaye hotel mein.
Raat mein kharab hua humare liye. Har taraf landslides the. 17 August ko, agle subah, mere papa ne alert kiya ki humain shahar se nikalna hoga kuch bhi ho. Driver se baat karke hum Kathgodam station chhodne ke liye maang liye. Jitna bhi unbelievable sound ho, maine khud ek landslide ko dekha. Humein badi mushkil se bacha, aur hamari car landslide se related traffic mein phas gayi. Hum lagbhag do ghante baad move kar paye, aur hum Kathgodam station pahuche. Main describe nahi kar sakta kitna bura tha situation; sab kuch yaad hai mere papa kehte hue, "Jidhar ki bhi train mile bas baith jana hai."
Sham ko 17th ko, hum pahuche train se Amritsar. Mujhe lagta hai yeh koi special train thi kyunki maine regular train ka hint nahi dekha Kathgodam se Amritsar ke beech. Humne do general tickets manage kiye aur general compartments mein chad gaye. Jab main agli subah utha, toh hum Amritsar mein the.
Amritsar mein hum bohot zyada waqt nahi rahe. Train se utarte hi, station mein fresh hoke, apne samaan ko Amritsar Junction ke cloakroom mein chhod diya. Amritsar mein, humne dekha Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, aur Attari-Wagah Border. Wahi sham, hum wahin wapas Amritsar station gaye. Chale Haridwar, most probably 14632 Amritsar Dehradun Express lekar, aur agle subah pahuche.
Yahan pe humne hotel reserve kiya. Hotel Ginger mein, jahan hum tha, pehli baar electricity system aur card-based gate lock dekha. Agle din, hum Rishikesh gaye mandiron Har Ki Paudi, Chandi Devi, aur Mansa Devi pe ja kar Haridwar mein, pichle din. Humne dekha Terah Manzila Mandir, Ram Jhula, aur Laxman Jhula Rishikesh mein. Wahi din, hum apne hotel mein wapas chale gaye Haridwar, apne bags uthaye, aur Haridwar railway station ko gaye. 20 August 2011, raat mein humne Upasana Express board kiya Howrah wapas ke liye, pahuche 22 August 2011 ko.
Aise, "hoch-poch" wali poori ek saptaah khatam hui, jiska anjaam tha suitcase bhara unexpected memories se.
Naye blogs jo Mr. Arnab aur Mr. Kumud forum pe post kiye the, yeh sab mere liye travelogue likhne ka inspiration ban gaye. Agar hum sab apne travelogues yahan post karte hain, toh mujhe lagta hai forum mein aur bhi fascinating stories add hogi, jo padhne mein maza aayega.
Umeed hai ki sabko pasand aaya hoga. Signing off...
