Best of Konkan Railway!
This is a 740 kilometer long railway line that runs along the South Western coast of India from Mangaluru(Mangalore) in Karnataka state to Roha in Maharashtra. Passing through the three states of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra, it ultimately connects Mangaluru to Mumbai and subsequently links other parts of the country. The line was completed in 1998 and forms one of the most important rail links in India. more... now runs as the Mangaluru-Madgaon Passenger. Rated for a speed of 160Kmph, the line is currently restricted to 120Kmph with further restrictions during the ravenous monsoons as the area is prone to landslides.
The longest bridge on this route is the Sharavati B bridge at Honnavar across the Sharavati River. A series of three bridges named A, B and C enable trains to cross the rain-fed Sharavati.
The longest tunnel along the route is the Karbude Tunnel at Ratnagiri and is six and a half kilometers in length. State-wise, the longest tunnels are Barcem Tunnel in Goa and Karwar tunnel in Karnataka.
The Panval Nadi Viaduct is the tallest bridge in Konkan Railway and is one of the tallest in the world. It routes trains from the four kilometer long Tike tunnel to the two kilometer long Banewadi tunnel and is located in Ratnagiri.
The major stations along the route are Udupi, Karwar, Madgaon, Ratnagiri and Chiplun. Crew change happens at Madgaon and Ratnagiri for through trains. Terminal stations include Karwar, Madgaon, Sawantwadi and Ratnagiri.
Some of the fastest trains along the route are the 12431/2 Nizamuddin Trivandrum Rajdhani express, 12133/4 Mangaluru Mumbai Express and 12051/2 Madgaon Dadar jan Shatabdi express.
The one of its kind RoRo service is operated between Surathkal and Kolad stations and is popular amongst the truck operators. Trucks or trailers are loaded onto flat bed trains and are transported along the route and this ensures that the truck operators save a fortune on toll and tires. A booking counter is present at the RoRo terminal stations for booking the RoRo wagons.
