However, due to corrosion, train services were suspended in December 2022. A new, modern sea bridge with a vertical lift span has replaced the old bridge. This new bridge, built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of ₹535 crore, offers higher air clearance and is designed for high-speed trains. The inauguration of the new bridge by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Gandhi Jayanti Day marks the resumption of train services to Rameswaram after a 22-month hiatus.
