Yep, and IMPO that's unfortunate.
.
No doubt, Dr. MGR had been an unbeatable icon in the tinsel town, performing only socially responsible roles and being a trendsetter, to later becoming one of the best CMs of the country (who popularized the mid-day meals at schools nationwide) to the extent of being conferred with the Bharat Ratna even before Dr. Ambedkar & Sardar Patel and mentor of Amma, I feel national properties, howsoever big the personality may be, shouldn't be named after individuals, not because they don't deserve it but there will be...
more... a clamor for renaming and slowly the idea will find itself in the conundrum of caste issues that will come into play. Already, people have started making proposals to rename Egmore after Dr. M. Karunanidhi.
.
TN had been in the forefront regarding this renaming culture until a couple of decades back when all the divisions of RTCs carried their own names from historical to caste leaders, viz., Pallavan, Cholan, Cheran, Pandiyan, Thiruvalluvar, Periyar, Anna, MGR, et al. There were even Jayalalitha Transport Corporation buses that ran between Chennai and Bengaluru for some time, until Dr. Karunanidhi, after it got out of hand and came a full circle, put a full-stop to this madness and simply termed it TNSTC (intrastate) and SETC (interstate).
.
Hope better sense prevails on the govt when it has its hands full with restructuring of railways and its finances. For once, let vote politics take a backseat.
